Unique Christmas Card Ideas: Sending Photo Holiday Cards And Other Tips

Creating unique Christmas cards is an excellent way to bring your immediate family together and to build new holiday traditions, as well as continue some old favorites. Gather around the computer and select the photographs that will be used, choose a color scheme, create a personal message, and determine the best font and style that will pull it all together.

This year's unique Christmas cards can be made even better with the addition of a newsletter that tells recipients what has gone on over the past year, a much-loved recipe that is popular during the winter holidays, or even a special gift coupon good for a free car wash by the kids, a special dinner at your home, or any other fun idea that helps to bring loved ones closer together during the upcoming year.

Family Photographs

Unique Christmas Card Ideas: Sending Photo Holiday Cards And Other Tips

Photo Christmas cards are one of the best ways to share with loved ones how your family has grown over the past year, to allow them to share in a special event, or to give them a good laugh with a funny theme. You can take photographs with everyone wearing Santa hats, thrashing about in the midst of a mad snowball fight, or standing around the tree. Photographs can also be used to create a collage of what has gone on over the past year: graduations, births, parties, personal achievements, or even comical disasters work well to help connect with loved ones, regardless of how far away they live.

Family Letters And Other Special Touches

Anyone can buy, sign, and send a Christmas card bought from a discount store, but creating unique Christmas cards will make this year extra special. Memorable inserts, such as a family letter, a favorite recipe exchange, a gift coupon, or some other personal touch that no one else can provide is what makes this holiday message so precious. In these days of families being spread out farther than ever, photo Christmas cards may be just what your loved ones need to feel connected.

Christmas letter inserts are a favorite way to maintain close contact with people who live far away. Also known as a newsletter, these Christmas letter inserts include pertinent information about the achievements, activities, and memorable moments of family members throughout the past year. The nice thing about newsletters is that they can be sent to everyone once they are written. There is no need to hand write the same message over and over again.

Recipe exchanges are another holiday tradition that is gaining in popularity. Everyone selects a favorite recipe and adds it to their holiday correspondence. This is an inexpensive way of sharing something personal with loved ones. The recipes that are exchanged within a large group of family and friends can become quite extensive, and the cooking adventures that follow are a gift of their own!

Other Winter Holidays

Of course, December 25th isn't the only winter holiday. Photographs and personalized messages can be integrated into Hanukah cards, Kwanzaa, Thanksgiving cards, New Years cards, and other autumn and winter holiday correspondence. Dark, chilly days leave many loved ones feeling alone. A warm message graced with familiar faces can be a profound boost during down times.

Rejoice With Recycled Paper

Not only can messages of goodwill toward man and peace on earth be sent in this year's unique Christmas cards, but using recycled materials protects precious resources and helps to create a better world for future generations. Instead of using new paper made from living trees, recycled Christmas cards reduce the amount of waste in landfills and improve air quality around the globe by allowing trees to remain standing. What better gift can anyone give loved ones than a healthy future?

Birth Announcements

Speaking of blessed futures, a birth around the holiday season is one of the greatest gifts ever. Families can share this joyous news with a unique Christmas card that doubles as a birth announcement! An adorable Santa hat or pair of inflatable reindeer antlers may be all it takes to turn this year's photo greeting card into a birth memento that will be treasured for generations to come!

Everyone from next-door neighbors to distant relatives will enjoy receiving photo Christmas cards that share your message of joy and goodwill at this special time of year. Whether your unique Christmas cards are solemn reminders of the religious significance of the season or a playful nod to your sillier side, they can be shared with family and friends around the world. The little bit of time it takes to create a photo Christmas card is a gift in and of itself. Familiar faces, kind words, and reminders of love and friendship are always a welcome gift, any time of year.

Fall Photography Tips

I always enjoy Fall. Fall is the most colorful time of year for photography. The seasons change so fast so we need to get out and take advantage of our beautiful scenery before it is gone.

So here are a few tips for getting the best Fall photographs:

Photography Tips

If it is sunny it is good to add a polarizing filter over your lens to help cut glare from the sun shining on the leaves. It also has the benefit of darkening the blue sky and saturating colors. Although I have recommended that every serious photographer have a polarizing filter this is the time to bring it out and see how it can really improve those photos. The degree of polarization with this filter will be different depending on the direction (relative to the sun) that you are photographing. Since the sun moves from East to West, the best direction for a polarizing effect is photographing in a Southerly or Northerly direction. Usually you want the sun to be at your shoulder for the best effect. Polarizing filters also rotate so the degree of polarization can be controlled by the amount the filter is rotated on the lens.

Fall Photography Tips

Although a sunny day is good for those sweeping landscapes, if you happen to be out on a cloudy or rainy day spend your time photographing the more detailed parts of leaves. Whereas the sun creates a light that is harsh because it is such a small pinpoint of light, clouds soften the light creating a large diffuse light source. This light doesn't cast any shadows and colors still remain quite saturated. To show detail we want this kind of light. You will find that your polarizing filter will have little effect when it's cloudy but it will help to cut the glare of the water on leaves if they are wet from rain. Rain on anything will make it look better. Some photographers bring spray bottles of water to add the rain affect on their flowers and leaves.

Don't forget to look up and down in your grove of changing leaves. By looking up you can contrast the color of the yellow leaves with the color of the blue sky. Yellow and blue are complementary colors which look wonderful together. Look for interesting patterns of branches spreading up into the sky from the trees. Screw on your polarizing filter for an even nicer effect of deep blue sky.

Don't be afraid to photograph right into the sun. I try to place the sun behind a branch and move until just a small ray shines out from behind. This small point of light will turn into a star burst on your photograph, especially if you use a small aperture. Experiment to see how this works and keep trying until you get that award winning image.

After looking up spend some time looking on the forest floor for colorful leaves grouped together. Some of the undergrowth is more colorful than the trees. Although I prefer to find what's already there, I've been known to gather leaves to group together in my own man made composition on the forest floor.

It is good to bring your tripod along when photographing under trees where the light can be limited and your exposure can be too long to hand hold your camera. Don't forget to get really close to the leaves too. If you happen to be near water or a small creek look for leaves floating in the water or stuck in an eddy.

Take time to enjoy this colorful season and capture its beauty while you can.

How to Photograph Sunrises - Top Tips For Sunrise Photography

To get a great photograph of a sunrise you need to set the alarm and rise before dawn. Stunning shots will involve a lot of preparation beforehand to make sure you're in the right place, at the right time, with the right equipment.

Scout out suitable locations

Photography Tips

You're going to want to spend the least amount of time possible finding the right spot - get a compass, a map, walking boots and go out before the day you intend to take your pictures to find yourself the best spot to catch the sunrise. That way you can have longer in bed before you need to get up.

How to Photograph Sunrises - Top Tips For Sunrise Photography

Get up early

If sunrise is at 5am, you're going to want to be at the spot at least half an hour before to catch the early light and make sure you don't miss anything.

Silhouettes

You can make great silhouette effects using the sun as backlighting. Think about where the sun is going to rise and try to frame an object as a point of foreground interest for extra impact.

Essential camera gear for sunrises

Tripod or support

Early mornings mean low light and long shutter speeds, so a steady camera is essential. Take a tripod or find something to support your camera on and use your self-timer or cable release to avoid camera shake whilst pressing the shutter.

Filters

A simple ND grad filter to help balance the exposure, or a sunset filter to enhance colour

Thermals

If it was cold when you went to bed it's going to be even colder when you wake up

Alarm clock

You're going to have to get up early to catch the sun.

Win A Dog Picture Contest - 5 Tips For Shooting Dog Images

Are you planning on entering a dog picture contest?

Want to increase your chances of winning?

Photography Tips

Entering your dog images in a dog picture contest can be an enjoyable experience. You can have fun taking pictures of your dog. And if you win, you'll feel good knowing that many people will be able to see your dog.

Win A Dog Picture Contest - 5 Tips For Shooting Dog Images

However, many dog owners don't take very good dog pictures. Here are 5 tips to help you shoot quality dog images.

1. Take more close-up shots.

Many amateur dog photographers do not take enough close-up photos. Why should you take more close-up pictures? Close-up pictures are usually more beautiful than shots from a distance. Many excellent dog pictures include much detail. To capture this detail, you will need to go close to your dog before taking the picture.

2. Squat or lie down to shoot at the dog's level.

Pictures taken at your dog's perspective help relate the viewers to your dog. You'll have a more engaging photo and you'll reduce unnatural angles. This method is also used to take great kids' photos.

3. Shoot in a well-lighted area.

Proper lighting is an important aspect to good photography. This is why many excellent dog pictures were shot outside. Natural light is the best light for photos. If you are taking pictures inside, get your dog near a window where there is more natural light.

4. Take a lot of pictures.

With digital cameras and reusable memory cards, taking many pictures has never been easier and more convenient. The more pictures you shoot, the better chance you have of taking a great picture.

5. Use your dog's favorite toy to showcase your dog's personality.

Many great dog images do good job of showing a dog's personality. Dog toys are a great way to get your dog to be more active and playful. Also, your dog will be more comfortable which makes for better dog images.

Professional Photographer Offers Tips For Shooting Newborns

Newborns of course do not follow directions well. They don't wake up when you want them to and sleep when you want them. They are fragile and cry a lot. These traits can make shooting newborns a challenge. The following are some tips for overcoming these challenges and getting some great newborn portraits.

Make sure have all the baby specific equipment on hand. You need to have on hand warm baby wipes, rocking chair, cloth diapers, a vibrator, and warm hands. You need these items for the following:

Photography Tips

1. Warm baby wipes will help keep the baby asleep during the shoot. The number one challenge to shooting newborn portraits is keeping them asleep. If they need to be cleaned up after having an "accident", you don't want to have to wipe them with cold wet wipes because it could foreclose any possibility that they will go back to sleep.

Professional Photographer Offers Tips For Shooting Newborns

2. A rocking chair is needed so Mom can nurse the baby before the photo shoot begins. If the baby is well fed before the shoot it is more likely he will sleep for a long period of time. Also, it is less likely that the photo shoot will be interrupted by a hungry baby's need to nurse.

3. Cloth diapers are essential. While you are working on getting the baby to sleep you want them in the diaper. You don't want any unprotected accidents in your studio. However, most parents will bring their children in plastic diapers. Plastic diapers tend to leave red marks on the baby. When you take the diaper off to get a nude shot you will be shooting those red marks. It is possible to photo shoot these spots out but it is better to avoid having to do the extra work in the first place.

4. A vibrator will help a baby sleep for a longer period of time. There are little chairs on the market for babies which vibrate. A photographer can purchase one of those chairs and take out the vibrator. This vibrator can go under blankets in any set the photographer wishes to use to aid the baby in sleeping.

5. Warm hands will help the baby feel warm and secure. Make sure you hands are warm. You don't want to do anything which might wake the baby up when you want it to sleep or cry when you need it to be cute. Cold hands will both wake the baby and make it cry.

Shooting newborn portraits can be a challenge. Follow these suggestions and you will find your sessions going more smoothly.

Photography Tips - Five Photography Habits to Learn

Photography is an art, similar to drawing or painting. There will always be those that are naturally gifted in one media or the other, and the rest of us have to work out ways to keep up. One of the easiest ways to match excellent photographers shot for shot is by adapting a few of their common practices. Here are five habits of great photographers, in no particular order:

Try Bracketing Your Shots

Photography Tips

Bracketing is simply the act of taking various exposures of the same picture. Any time you're taking pictures and the end result is important, you should bracket your shots by shooting one normal photo, then one below the recommended exposure as well as one above. This will give you more options for choosing the best picture and will also prevent over and under exposure. However, if you're shooting with a digital camera there is no reason to bracket your shot as you don't need to worry about burning your film.

Photography Tips - Five Photography Habits to Learn

Properly Care for Your Equipment

A camera lens will give you a near-exact representation of what you saw when you looked through it, but only if that lens is clean of debris. Although it is easy to touch up your images using a photo editor, it is easiest just to use a cleaning kit and properly clean your gear before shooting. Additionally, you should always keep your gear in a bag or case when not in use to prevent dust buildup or accidental damage. And, of course, make sure to charge that battery!

Make Your Image Tell a Story

One of the key differences between a good picture and a great photograph is that a photograph has a story to tell. Every shot you take should convey some sort of narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. Although this may seem like a daunting task, once you practice, it will become easier to frame your image so the story all comes together. When shooting a sequence of photographs, try to tie them all together with one theme; this will increase their emotional impact.

Work In-Camera

Most professional photographers agree that the less time spent in the editing room means that the better you did using your camera. By learning how to work with your camera to get the results you want, you'll become a much better photographer than spending all your time editing. You should think of photo editing more as a safety net that's used as a last resort and not something you depend upon to transform your images from bad to good.

Learn Your Craft

Like any skill, if you want to get good at something you have to invest time to learn it. This means that you should do activities like studying the works of great photographers, practice shooting as much as possible and taking classes or reading books about photography. The more you know about how photos work and what makes one better than the other, the more reliable you will become in creating great work. Another option is to consider joining a photo club or website like a photo forum where you can find useful tips.

There is no great mystery or untold secret to becoming a great photographer. The more you train your eyes to look at the world through a frame, the better you'll get at spotting great photo opportunities. These five habits can help you to reach this point sooner, especially if you're shooting as much as you possibly can. Practice may not make you perfect, but it will definitely make you better.

How to Shoot Portraits - 5 Camera Setting Tips For Great Results

Camera setting tips for portraits:

Portrait photography delivers best results when you focus attention on the subject and control the background. Avoiding distracting elements or blurring the background draws the attention on your subject. Besides making your subject "the star" of the frame you also need proper exposure and focus, showing right skin tones and details.

Photography Tips

Whether you are shooting for posed portraits or moving children, if you can control 5 camera settings you will capture excellent portrait shots.

How to Shoot Portraits - 5 Camera Setting Tips For Great Results

Control 5 Camera settings for superb results:

1) Shooting Mode
2) Focus Settings
3) Exposure
4) Metering
5) White Balance

SHOOTING MODE

Aperture priority is the most popular shooting mode for portraits. Using this mode Photographer sets the f-stop and the camera chooses the shutter speed.

Aperture priority mode gives direct control of depth of field. Controlling depth of field means that you can blur the background to draw attention on your subject.

Alternatively you can use Manual Mode. Using this mode you can you can control both aperture and shutter speed. If there is a consistent light source use manual and you still be able to control surroundings of the subject.

EXPOSURE

When you shoot portraits and slightly overexpose you will notice that your background details will be washed out and your subject's skin tones will appear lighter. After your camera meter suggests exposure values, first shoot with suggested settings. Later shoot couple extra using plus 1EV or plus 2EV of exposure compensation to see what they look like.

FOCUS SETTINGS

Single-Shot AF (Auto Focus) mode is perfect for shooting portraits. When using Single-Shot AF Mode, select a Single Auto Focus point. For example for portrait shots, focusing closer to the subject's eyes works best. When focusing on the target point, you may use either Centre or Off-Centre settings. This way you will get sharp focus.

One of the most difficult portrait shot is a moving subject. If you are photographing moving children use Continuous AF mode. In addition choose multiple focus points. Combination of continuous AF mode and multiple focus points will increase the chance of capturing a sharp image.

METERING

For general portrait shots Multi-Segment Metering works just fine. However, if you are shooting a back-lit subject, Multi-Segment may not work properly because this mode will underexpose the subject's face. In such case take a reading from your subject's forehead or cheek using Spot Metering. Then use the values and shoot in Manual Exposure mode. Make sure that you are not shooting in Aperture Priority mode - (you will need to set both aperture and shutter speed values manually since you have use the spot metering and received new exposure values).

WHITE BALANCE

Auto White Balance is good for general shots. However shooting in different environments things may go wrong. For example if you are shooting in a shady area you will not get the proper white balance. Or if you shoot in scenes with predominant white blue or green (beach, botanic garden, forest etc...) your subject's face will reflect that predominant color. In such you can take a custom white balance reading and use it.

Keep in mind that you have the option to change white balance settings and apply correction if you are shooting in RAW mode. So if that portrait shot is quite important for you, shoot in RAW so you have an option to correct white balance later on.

Wedding Photography - Tips For Taking Digital Photographs During A Wedding

For anyone that is or has been married, the events of the day can be captured in images, forever; digital wedding photography has changed how wedding photographers can carry out their work ensuring the day is captured on disk. There is no reason why a DVD can't be made of the occasion to complement to photos!

Most wedding photographers have assistants so they can create a wedding album that will be memorable but if you want to take pictures of a friend's wedding, who will help you? So, if you need some help for a wedding you are to attend and you are going to use a digital camera, then you may find some useful information in this article.

Photography Tips

Unless you know how to compensate or have taken the shot purposely for effect; remember the background is very important. Often the couple is in the thick of a crowd and at this point it may be easier to try and capture just their head and shoulders.

Try to get guests that have spectacles on to either remove them or hold their head at an angle so that there isn't a reflection obscuring their eyes. If there's a couple or a group that you wish to include in the picture, you should use the zoom function in to get the ideal image but do not shoot against the light so that dark images appear.

Candid shots are also dramatic and these portraits often reveal more than the quality of the picture itself; in fact, many professionals use the zoom to capture intimate and memorable moments. You should be alert at all times when shooting digital wedding photography since you can seldom ask people to keep posing for you and the day is also about spontaneity.

The last thing you want to happen is for your digital camera to have half charged batteries and a memory card that is already half full as it will restrict how many shots you can take. As a general rule, if your camera is a 6 mega pixel resolution then you will need a large storage capacity card that will hold a few hundred shots at high resolution so a 1 gigabyte card should be sufficient.

The reason you need to set the cameras resolution to the maximum is because the colors will be richer and if you want to enlarge the photos, it won't be a problem. This is achieved by saving the images to your computer where you can print them out at your leisure on special photographic paper.

If you are used to regular film photography you may find the change to digital wedding photography a little strange at first but persist and you may find you enjoy it more.

10 Tips For What to Wear For Your Portrait Session

Do the clothes make the person? Hard to say... but they often make the portrait. When planning for a portrait session stick to these 10 tips when deciding what to wear and you'll be on your way to awesome portraits.

Be comfortable: Good pictures will require a certain comfort level from you, the subject. If you are scared of losing your balance in high heels or sweating under that polyester shirt then good pictures are going to be harder to come by. Stick to clothes you like, that build your confidence and are functional and comfortable. Clothes are a statement: Outfit changes are the norm in a portrait shoot so mix it up with some clothing options that will make for more fun, sassy portraits. Bring along other outift options that are more formal to ensure a more broad choice of pictures showcasing the various parts of your personalities. Keep it simple: Dark, plain fabrics usually work best. Avoid crazy patterns, designs and logos too. Clothing with distinct lines, dots and bright patterns can be troublesome too. Same goes for shiny fabrics. Keep your jewelry choices simple and minimal. Avoid short sleeves and shorts: Long sleeves and pants are the superior choice. Skin tones can vary a bunch on various legs and arms not to mention the lighter complexion can distract the eye when viewing the pictures. Not too many choices and changes: You should feel welcome to have a few clothing changes but don't overwhelm yourself and your photographer with choices. It takes a little time for your photographer to get the creative ball rolling. Stopping for multiple outfit changes can disrupt that process. Ask before wearing whites: Yes, dark solid print clothes are generally better, but rules are made to be broken. Talk with your photographer before the shoot if you are considering a white shirt. It can look awesome in certain kinds of backgrounds and environments so let your photographer know and they will be better prepared to make excellent photos. Props (nothing hokey here): Does your lovebird indulge you with an old-fashioned picnic once in a while? How about a tune on the guitar? Bring along a few items that reveal unique aspects of your relationship. Talk it over before the session with your photographer. Suitability to locations, or not: If you and your photographer are hiking about on nature trails to get to your locations then you will want to consider clothing that is practical and appropriate for that surrounding. Or, for a little extra contrast, maybe really dress it up with a suit and tie for him and wonderful dress for her to strike a visual contrast with the rustic surroundings. Again, talk with your photographer beforehand about such ideas and get their input. A little planning always helps. Classic, timeless styles: Great pictures last a long, long time so be sure your clothing choices will age gracefully. What is the fashionable trend today can easily be tomorrow's parachute pants so stow away the Ed Hardy shirts. Hats, scarves and accessories for extra cute children's portraits: An oversized ball cap or a football jersey from Mom and Dad's alma mater always works well.

Photography Tips

Following these guidelines will help with the mystifying task of selecting what to wear for your portrait session. But remember, photography is a creative collaboration. So some rules are made to be broken.
